The UCSF Academic Senate is happy to announce the faculty selected by peers as the 2023 Distinction in Teaching and Distinction in Mentoring Award winners. An event to recognize their efforts will be held on Monday, May 15th, 2023, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Parnassus Campus, room N-225 and broadcasted on Zoom. The Spring 2023 recipient of the Academic Senate Distinction in Teaching Award for faculty at UCSF for five years or fewer is Barbie Klein, PhD, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anatomy at the School of Medicine and in the Department of Cell and Tissue Biology at the School of Dentistry. Dr. Klein is a Faculty Advisor at the UCSF Willed Body Program. She is the Discipline Director for the pelvic/perineum anatomy and human embryology content blocks for medical students and Co-director of the Biomedical Sciences curriculum for dental students. Dr. Klein is based at the UCSF Parnassus campus.

The Spring 2023 Academic Senate Distinction in Teaching Award for faculty at UCSF for more than five years goes to Sara Whetstone, MD, MHS, an Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at the School of Medicine. She is currently the Residency Program Director and previously served as the Interim Vice Chair of Equity, Inclusion, and Structural Change for her department. She continues to lead the EMPOWUR curriculum, which seeks to transform resident education by centering issues of equity, anti-racism, and structural racism and by integrating experiences around care for historically excluded and marginalized communities. Dr. Whetstone is based at the UCSF Medical Center at the Mount Zion campus.

The Spring 2023 recipient of the Academic Senate Distinction In Mentoring Award for faculty at the rank of Associate Professor is Andrea V. Jackson, MD, MAS, an Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at the School of Medicine. She is Chief of the Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Gynecologic Subspecialty division at UCSF and Co-director of the UCSF Black Women’s Health and Livelihood Initiative and EMBRACE, a perinatal program recognized in 2022 by Vice President Kamala Harris as the model for providing racially conscious prenatal and postpartum physical and mental health care for Black Families. Dr. Jackson is based at the UCSF Medical Center at the Mount Zion campus.

The Spring 2023 recipient of the Academic Senate Distinction In Mentoring Award for faculty at the rank of Associate Professor is Jennifer C. Lai, MD, MBA, an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the School of Medicine. She serves as Director of UCSF Health Advancing Research in Clinical Hepatology (ARCH) and Director of the Patient-Facing Research Core of the NIH-funded UCSF Liver Center. Dr. Lai also serves as an Associate Editor for the Hepatology Journal and as a standing member of the U.S. FDA Gastrointestinal Drug Advisory Committee. Dr. Lai is based at the UCSF Parnassus campus.

The Spring 2023 recipient of the Academic Senate Distinction In Mentoring Award for faculty at the rank of Full Professor is Marina Tolou-Shams, PhD, the Kilroy Realty Professor of Psychiatry and Vice Chair for Community Engagement, Outreach and Advocacy in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the School of Medicine. She is also the Deputy Vice Chair of Research in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Director of the Juvenile Justice Behavioral Health lab at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, where she is based.

To select each year’s awards, the Academic Senate Committee on Academic Personnel designates selection committees comprised of faculty and student representatives from all four schools. Student representatives are recommended by the Associate Deans in Student Affairs from each of the respective Schools. Faculty representatives are recommended by the Associate Deans of Academic Affairs from each School.
