2019-2020 Academic Senate Distinguished Faculty Awards

While the UCSF Academic Senate acknowledges that due to COVID-19, the clinical enterprise at UCSF is of upmost importance at this time, we also wanted to recognize the efforts of teaching and mentoring accomplished by four UCSF faculty who were selected as this year’s recipients of the Distinction In Teaching and the Distinction In Mentoring Awards.

Recipients of the Academic Senate Distinction In Teaching Awards and the Distinction In Mentoring Awards will be honored at the Senate’s Distinguished Faculty Awards Ceremony on October 20, 2020 at 12:00 pm.

To select each year’s Distinction in Teaching Award the Academic Senate Committee on Academic Personnel designates selection committees comprised of faculty and student representatives from all four schools. Student representatives are assigned by Associate Deans from each of the respective Schools.


For 2020, the Academic Senate Distinction in Teaching Award for faculty at UCSF five years or fewer goes to Erica M. Gastelum, MD, Assistant Clinical Professor, Department of Pediatrics, School of Medicine (SOM). Dr. Gastelum is based at UCSF Fresno.

The 2020 Academic Senate Distinction in Teaching Award for faculty at UCSF more than five years goes to Katherine Hyland, PhD, Adjunct Professor, Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics, SOM, member of the UCSF Institute for Human Genetics and the Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators, and Director of the Medical Genetics Theme in the UCSF SOM Bridges Curriculum. Dr. Hyland is based at UCSF Parnassus campus.
        
The Distinction In Mentoring Award Selection Committee is appointed by the Associate Deans in the respective Schools, and is Chaired by a member of the Committee on Academic Personnel. The selection committee is comprised of four Associate Professors and four full Professors, one of each from each school.

The 2020 recipient of the Academic Senate Distinction In Mentoring Award for faculty at the Associate rank is Naomi Bardach, MD, MAS, Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics, Department of Pediatrics, SOM. Dr. Bardach is Core Faculty at the Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies, and Associate Division Chief of Research in the General Pediatrics Division. Dr. Bardach is based at the Laurel Heights campus.  

The 2020 recipient of the Academic Senate Distinction In Mentoring Award for faculty at the rank of full Professor is Monica Gandhi, MD, MPH, Professor of Clinical Medicine, Department of Medicine, SOM. She serves as the Director of the UCSF Center for AIDS Research (CFAR), the Medical Director of the Ward 86 HIV Clinic and the Associate Chief of Clinical Operations & Education for the Division of HIV, Infectious Diseases & Global Medicine at ZSFG. Dr. Gandhi is based at ZSFG Hospital.
