The Academic Senate is pleased to announce the selection of Carol Gross, PhD, as recipient of the 62nd Annual Faculty Research Lectureship – Basic Science.

The Academic Senate is pleased to announce the sixty-second annual Faculty Research Lecture in Basic Science awarded to Carol Gross, PhD, Professor of Cell and Tissue Biology and Microbiology and Immunology, School of Medicine. The lecture title is My Life in Science: An Improbable Journey.

Faculty Research Lecture Basic Science Carol Gross, PhD

Professor Gross is recognized as a world leader in microbial sciences. Her lab, which investigates bacterial signaling networks, has contributed to understanding the transcriptional network of stress responses and envelope homeostasis in E. coli. Her research has made seminal discoveries and profoundly influenced fields spanning gene expression, protein folding, cell envelop assembly and function, and cellular homeostasis in bacterial and other systems.

Professor Gross received her Ph.D. from University of Oregon in 1968. She joined the UCSF faculty in 1993. She is a member of the National Academy of Science and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She received the Waksman Prize in 2011. Dr. Gross has authored over 190 publications.

She has also contributed to a changing culture at UCSF. Involved in the formation of a UCSF Faculty Diversity Committee, Dr. Gross continues to organize and lead this important work. She is also credited for developing the idea behind the Summer Research Training Program which serves as a pipeline for recruiting underrepresented minority students.

Dr. Gross is the fifth woman to receive this Faculty Research Lecture in Basic Science.

The Academic Senate Faculty Research Lecture will be held in Byers Auditorium at the Mission Bay Campus on Friday, March 15, 2019, at 3:30 p.m. The event will also be recorded for viewing live or at a later time. The video link will be available on the Senate website the day of the event.

A reception in the atrium of Genentech Hall will follow the lecture.
